YUM: The Real Dark 'n' Stormy

Ever since moving to New York, I've been on the search for the perfect Dark 'n' Stormy. There are lots of places that serve their own version of the drink, but none of them ever tasted just right. The Dark 'n' Stormy recipe is trademarked by Goslings and is traditionally Goslings Black Seal Rum with Barritt's Ginger Beer. Although now Goslings has come out with their own version of ginger beer, which isn't bad but just doesn't taste the same as Barritt's.

When I lived in Annapolis, Dark 'n Stormys were quite ubiquitous. It's the perfect summer drink, especially refreshing after a day of sailing! I have been trying to buy Barritt's here in Manhattan, but was having a hard time. A quick google search showed that I am not alone, and that others are looking for it too. A few leads led to nowhere, and I was about to resign myself to a summer without this great drink, when M ordered me some online! (Click here to order.)

So now I have all of the ingredients to create my very own Dark 'n Stormy!

All you need is:

  • 2 oz. Goslings Black Seal Rum
  • 4-5 oz. ginger beer (my favorite is the Barritt's)
  • optional squeeze of lime
Here is a video on how to make it, from the CEO of Goslings.

  1. I'm so jealous! I'm from Bermuda, so I know all about the TRUE Dark n Stormy. Sadly, I'm not at home this summer, so no real Dark n Stormies for me. I have the Black (bought at the duty free on my way out the last time I was home), but there is no Barritt's in the entire state of Michigan. :( I consoled myself by making rum swizzle (Bermuda's other national drink) instead. I tried the Goslings ginger beer the last time I was home and agree that it's just not the same.
